Exchange Squad 2017

I imagine that there’s a ribbon, a blue and green globe-printed ribbon, and that the Virginia team of academic coordinators is racing along to place 20 students (that’s where the ribbon is, at the 20 student mark). CHI’s goal is for the academic year program to place 900 students this year.  That’s 900 kids with…

The magic of firsts

Part of the joy of sharing our experiences is that the things that for us are ordinary: are amazing when experienced through the lens of a young person having that experience for the very. first. time. We had our first snow of the year in Virginia this weekend. As I watched it come down, I…

Thankful Friday: Vol. One

Thankful Thursday: Thankful Friday resolution: I think it’s normal to get caught up in the happenings of life. Indeed, there’s so much happening! I work with exchange students in Virginia and they are: In art club, performing in plays, being involved in sports, meeting new friends, exploring, discovering and getting their bearings in their schools…

AYP Student Orientation

AYP Student Orientation This is a powerpoint tool to be used during orientation for new AYP program students.  It is to be provided by DAPA or AC and can be broken into 3 parts for breaking large groups up into smaller groups.  It is important to provide the orientation with the student orientation materials to include a thank you…

The first group outing: Washington D.C.

I had a great time meeting all of the students at orientation.  On Saturday the wonderful Dempsey, Gach, Miller, Scott & Thomas families took the students in Albemarle, Fluvanna and Louisa county. Looks like they had a great time together!  I’m so glad they had a good time. The benefits of these kind of gatherings…

Students of 2016/17: They’re all here!

I love our host families and feel so incredibly honored to get to witness their generosity, and the thoughtfulness with with they plan for their students arrival. The year is full of great moments, but one of my favorites is the first one when our families and students meet in person for the first time….

A Day Together

A few weeks back the CHI Virginia group (7 exchange students, 4 host families, and a couple of the CHI staff) took a hike together. It was warm (I got a little sunburned), but our families had fun.  Getting to spend the day with our amazing big-hearted host families was awesome.  I felt pretty excellent…

Students of 2016/2017

Let’s make this dream team’s dreams come true. Our Virginia team of academic coordinators has been assigned these wonderful young people to find volunteer host families for.  It’s important to me that we make good matches and find wonderful supportive host families for these guys to spend their exchange year with. I want everyone involved…

Exchanging Gifts

The kids that come to the U.S. as exchange students are tremendous.  They are amazing young people that courageously leave their homes to spend almost a year abroad. They do this out of a hope that the experience will bolster their futures, improve their English skills, and strengthen their future careers.  More and more, English is considered…
